My whipped tallow lotion is made with tallow from grass-fed, grass-finished cows here from a local MN farm. It is made with 4 parts tallow and 1 part Non-GMO Avocado Oil.
I do not scent the lotion. You can add a few drops of essential oil, if you wish. The tallow has a very, very mild beefy smell, but once it is soaked into the skin no smell remains.
I wet render it first for over 15 hours on low heat, with water and Pink Himalayan Sea Salt and I strain it. Rendering it slowly prevents a strong beef smell. This process takes away any residual meat bits that may have been in the tallow chunk I received. I refrigerate it overnight, the impurities sink to the bottom of the bowl and then I scrape them off. A creamy white block of tallow is what remains.
I do a dry second render, and strain it again. I refrigerate it a second time, and if there are any bits on the bottom, once it hardens, those are removed. Usually there are not any bits left, as I've strained it twice by this step.
Once I am ready to mix the avocado oil and tallow, I melt the tallow on low heat, let it cool to room temperature, then I mix it with the avocado oil. Once again, this goes into the refrigerator to solidify. Once it is solid, I whip it with a stand mixer, and put it in sterilized glass jars.
All the containers I use in this process are either glass or stainless steel.
Refrigerate it to extend the shelf-life. The shelf-life is about a year.
